IS Releasing the debt NOT Pretending nothing happened.

“…his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt.” -Matthew 18:27 NLT

IS Giving justice to God NOT Saying the wrong was acceptable.

“Never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God.” -Romans 12:19 NLT

IS An act of obedience NOT Waiting until you feel like forgiving.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” -Ephesians 4:32 NLT

IS A decision that may need to be repeated NOT Always a one-time emotional moment.

“Peter came to him and asked, ‘Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?’ ‘No, not seven times,’ Jesus replied, ‘but seventy times seven!’” -Matthew 18:21–22 NLT

  • People are human and will probably mess up again. Just like me!!

IS Freedom from bitterness and revenge NOT Freedom from all consequences for the offender.

“Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you.” -Hebrews 12:15 NLT

IS Something you can do even if the other person never apologizes NOT Dependent on the other person changing first.

“When you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” -Mark 11:25 NLT

IS A step toward reconciliation when reconciliation is possible NOT The same thing as reconciliation.

“Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” -ROMANS 12:18 NLT

Forgiveness is from the Heart of God

Forgiveness is Submission to the Lordship of Christ

Forgiveness is Empowered by Holy Spirit:

“Forgiveness does not change what happened; it changes who gets to carry it.”
