When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”

But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? So, I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!” Mark 2:1-12 NLT

Why Choose Jesus Over Sin?

Sin Invites God’s Judgment → Jesus “…personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right.” — 1 Peter 2:24 (NLT)

Sin Destroys Our Purpose → Jesus says, “…we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” — Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

Sin Destroys Peace and Joy → Jesus says, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.” — John 14:27 (NLT)

Sin Brings Fear → in Jesus we know that… “…God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” — 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

Sin Blinds Us to Truth → Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” — John 8:12 (NLT)

Sin Brings Shame → in Jesus, “No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced.” — Psalm 25:3 (NLT)

Sin Corrupts the Heart → Jesus promises, “I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you.” — Ezekiel 36:26 (NLT)

Sin Enslaves Us → Jesus says, “If the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” — John 8:36 (NLT)

Sin Brings Condemnation → in Jesus, “…there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1 (NLT)

Sin Separates Us From God → but in Jesus, “…you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.” — Ephesians 2:13 (NLT)
